How to Find the Right Financial Coach
(And Why It Matters for Women+)
Let’s get real here…
Navigating money as a woman+ can feel like trying to learn a language no one ever actually taught us. You’re told to “manage your finances”, “stay out of debt,” “invest early,” “build wealth,” and “budget better,” but when you start looking for help, the advice is either gatekept, condescending, or straight-up written for dudes.
That’s where a financial coach comes in (HAYYYY🙋♀️).
But not just any coach. The right one can change your entire financial future and relationship with money. The wrong one? They’ll have you feeling like you just got a lecture from your dad about “cutting back on lattes.” 🙄
So, let’s break it down: what to look for, what to avoid, and why finding the right coach matters so damn much.
But first! What is a financial coach?
A financial coach is your go-to guide for the financial literacy and accountability side of money.
They shouldn’t sell you products or manage your investments. They help you understand your financial goals, teach you about the principles we should have learned in school, and hold you accountable to getting shit done, so you can actually build the life you want.
Think of it like personal training… but for your bank account.
A good financial coach helps you:
Get clear on where your money’s going (without judgment)
Build habits that align with your values
Create a financial plan that supports your lifestyle, not one that makes you miserable
Educate you on different financial products and the lingo
Feel confident making money decisions, even when life throws curveballs
Empower you to take control of your own finances through every stage of your life.
It’s crucial that you find the right one because you’re going to be creating a long-lasting relationship and sharing a lot of personal shit with them!
💬 How to find the right financial coach
Anyone can call themselves a coach these days. But not everyone is qualified to guide you through something as emotional and personal as your finances.
Here’s how to find someone legit:
Look for someone who gets your stage of life.
If you’re juggling debt, hormones, and a career pivot, you don’t need a coach who only talks about optimizing tax strategies for six-figure portfolios. You need someone who gets your reality, your stress, and your goals.
Check their vibe. Seriously.
Money is intimate. You’re going to talk about fears, patterns, and maybe even cry (been there). You need a coach you actually like and feel safe with.
Hop on a free call, scroll their Instagram, read their blog. Do they sound like someone who empowers you, or someone who’s trying to scare you into signing up?
Ask about their approach.
Do they follow a one-size-fits-all system? Or do they tailor their coaching to your specific goals and values?
A solid financial coach will meet you where you’re at, whether that’s paying off credit cards, learning to invest, or figuring out how to stop feeling anxious every time you check your account balance.
Look for transparency.
You should know exactly what you’re getting into: the cost, the structure, and what’s included. Coaching should never feel like a mystery box or a sales pitch disguised as a “clarity call.”
Look for alignment, not perfection.
Your coach doesn’t need to be living your dream life (we’re all works in progress). But they should walk the talk, share real experiences, and demonstrate the kind of mindset you want to build.
💪 Why this matters (especially for women+)
Here’s the thing: learning about money isn’t optional anymore. It’s mandatory.
Women+ still earn less, live longer, and take more time out of the workforce to care for others, which means we can’t afford to stay in the dark about how money works and how to manage it.
Financial literacy isn’t just about numbers. It’s about power.
When you understand money, you:
Stop outsourcing your security to someone else
Make informed decisions in relationships, careers, and life transitions
Build options for your future, because options are freedom
No one is coming to save us financially.
And that’s not meant to scare you. It’s meant to empower you. Because when women+ take ownership of their finances, we don’t just build wealth, we build confidence, boundaries, and generational change.
